Watch Out: This Trick Could Cost You Thousands
In California, a Smog Check is a required part of registering a vehicle under a new ownerโs name. If the car doesnโt pass the test, you may not be able to complete the registration process and legally drive the vehicle. Some sellers know this and use a trick that the average buyer would never notice.
When an expensive catalytic converter fails, the Check Engine light usually comes on. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on repairs, some dishonest sellers install a device designed to hide the problem.
They install a special mechanical or electronic spacer (O2 spacer/simulator) on the oxygen sensor (O2 sensor).
The spacer moves the sensor away from the exhaust stream or alters the sensorโs signal. As a result, the vehicleโs computer is fooled into thinking the catalytic converter is working properly, and the Check Engine light stays off.
Many buyers bring a simple OBD2 scanner when inspecting a vehicle before purchase.
ย ๐ง No trouble codes
ย ๐ง No Check Engine light
ย ๐ง No obvious drivability issues
The vehicle may seem perfectly fine.
However, once you take the car to an official Smog Check station, the trick may be uncovered. The inspector may identify unauthorized modifications during a visual inspection or detect emissions-related issues that cause the vehicle to fail the test.
In California, replacing a CARB-compliant catalytic converter can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 or more, depending on the vehicle.
How Can You Protect Yourself?
Detecting this type of modification is nearly impossible without getting underneath the vehicle and carefully inspecting the oxygen sensors and exhaust system.
Our Extended Pre-Purchase Inspection now includes a dedicated Smog Check Readiness Inspection.
We do more than simply read trouble codes.
โ Verifying the status of all Readiness Monitors
โ Performing a detailed physical inspection of the exhaust system for hidden O2 spacers and other emissions-related modifications
โ Looking for signs of tampering that could lead to future Smog Check or registration problems
Donโt risk your money on hidden problems.
Schedule a professional pre-purchase inspection and buy with confidence.
