A Little Chemistry Under the Hood

Sometimes diagnosing an engine problem feels like a small chemistry experiment.

In this test we check if exhaust gases are leaking into the cooling system, which is one of the main signs of a blown head gasket.

Here’s how it works:

 We use a special tester with a chemical indicator fluid.

 The tool pulls air from the radiator through the fluid.

 If combustion gases are present, the fluid changes color.

If the liquid stays blue, the cooling system is clean.

If it turns green or yellow, it means exhaust gases are entering the coolant, usually due to a head gasket failure or a cracked cylinder head.

This simple test can save a lot of time and prevent unnecessary repairs because it helps us quickly confirm or rule out serious engine problems.

• overheating

• coolant loss with no visible leaks

• white smoke from the exhaust

• pressure in the cooling system

it might be time for a combustion leak test.
